Kuat Drive Yards
KDY, along with SFS, Rendili, and CEC, was the primary
warship supplier for the Empire, and the Galactic Republic
in its later days. Although some divisions of the company
focus on fighters, transports, and other minor craft, it is
known for its impressive, kilometers-long combat vessels.
They set the standard for galactic warship design, and many
of KDY's competitors have adopted similar styling in their
own ships.
As a result of the millions of ships previously used by
the Republic and Empire, many of the New Republic's larger
worlds use KDY ships in their defense fleets.
Warships
of the Empire lists more ships that were probably
designed or manufactured by KDY.
A-9 Vigilance Interceptor
|
The A-9 Vigilance Interceptor was designed and
built during the last days of the Empire, but
wasn't officially introduced until shortly before
the Battle of Calamari. Intended to compete with
fast fighters such as the A-wing and TIE
Interceptor, the A-9 has an impressive propulsion
system, but lacks strong hull plating or shielding.
To offset this, the A-9 has laser cannons that are
significantly more powerful that most fighters'.

Corona-class Star Frigate
|
The Corona-class Star Frigate was designed by
Kuat Drive Yards as an upgraded version of the
Nebulon-B Escort Frigate. This ship trades two
laser cannons and two turbolasers for ion cannons,
has faster hyperdrive and sublight engines, and is
somewhat smaller than the Nebulon-B.

Eclipse-class Star Command Ship
|
The Eclipse-class was designed alongside the
Executor-class, but is much more massive and
powerful. Only two ships of this type were built,
the Eclipse and Eclipse II, and neither survived
beyond a few months after their commissioning. No
further Eclipses were constructed; the
Executor-class was a far more popular choice for a
command ship.

Escort Carrier
|
The Escort Carrier was designed exclusively to
carry starfighters (such as TIEs) and other craft
that lack hyperdrives. The ship normally holds one
wing of fighters (72 total) and six shuttles, along
with the necessary support personnel and equipment.
Unlike most KDY ships, the Escort Carrier is
box-shaped and very lightly armed.
"Escort Carrier" is
probably just a nickname for this type of vessel;
we do not know it's true designation.

Executor-class Star Command Ship
|
Executor-class ships were among the largest
conventional vessels constructed during the
Emperor's reign. Covered in sensor globes and
communications towers, these ships serve as mobile
headquarters that can coordinate the activities of
fleets and armies throughout extensive areas of
space. The first ship of this class, the Executor,
was completed a year before the Battle of Hoth;
dozens more soon followed.
Executor-class ships are
sometimes called "Super Star Destroyers" or
"Super-class Star Destroyers," but those
designations are probably just nicknames or
Alliance colloquialisms. In addition, the length of
these ships is often incorrectly reported as 8 km,
even though the Executor was over 11 times the size
of 1.6 km ISDs in the movies. For more information,
see the link below.

Galleon-class Star Frigate
|
The Galleon-class Star Frigate ("Star Galleon")
is a rather unorthodox ship design, in both form
and function. It does not share the dagger-shaped
hull found on most KDY ships, nor is it well-armed.
In addition, the Galleon's cargo hold can function
independently as if it were its own ship, although
it lacks a propulsion system. Nonetheless, this odd
vessel serves as an excellent transport for
important or valuable cargo, and is often used in
that capacity.

Lancer-class Star Frigate
|
KDY's Lancer-class, like the earlier Nebulon-B,
was designed to primarily combat starfighters;
these ships carry only anti-fighter weapons. Thus,
these vessels are essentially defenseless against
capital ships, but a single Lancer can easily win a
battle against unescorted starfighters.

Landing Brick F7
|
The "Landing Brick" is used exclusively for
transporting troops and equipment from an orbiting
vessel to a planet at high speeds when conventional
landing craft are unavailable or unsuited to the
task.
"Landing Brick F7" is a
very odd designation for a ship, especially one
manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards. It is possible
that another company produces these ships, and KDY
purchases them for inclusion on its
warships.

Imperator-class Star Destroyer
|
The Imperator-class Star Destroyer (also
referred to as the "ISD" or "Imperial-class Star
Destroyer") was one of the most common Imperial
ships used during the reign of the Emperor.
Thousands were constructed, and could be found in
abundance throughout the galaxy. In the core
regions ISDs usually served as escorts for the
larger cruisers, battlecruisers, and battleships;
in the outer regions, they often functioned as
flagships or carriers for smaller fleets or
armadas.
According to
LucasFilm/ILM, the Star Destroyers seen in the
movies are "Imperator-class" ships. "Imperial-class
Star Destroyer" is merely a colloquial Alliance/New
Republic term.

Imperator-class Star Destroyer
(Mark II)
|
The Imperator-class Star Destroyer (Mark II) is
a newer version of the original ISD. It has a
faster hyperdrive, upgraded shields, and improved
weapons.
An example of the Mark II
ISD would be the Avenger, as opposed to the
original ISD, an example of which is the
Devastator. They can easily be distinguished via
the appearance of the engines: original ISDs have
small triple baffles surrounding the main engines,
whereas Mark II ISDs have ring baffles. The two
types also have different bridge towers.
The "Mark II" designation
is from X-wing: The Bacta War.

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate
|
The Nebulon-B Escort Frigate, like the later
Lancer Frigate, was designed primarily to combat
starfighters, and thus includes laser cannons for
precision targeting. These ships also have
turbolasers for combat with capital ships, although
not enough to pose a serious threat to attackers.
Both the Empire and Alliance used these vessels,
since the latter organization was able to capture
them with relative ease.
The Nebulon-B has an
unusual designation and design for a KDY ship. It
may have originated at a different company.

Sovereign-class Star Command Ship
|
The Sovereign-class is essentially a scaled-down
version of the larger Eclipse-class. It has fewer
weapons, a slower hyperdrive, and carries a smaller
complement of starfighters and crewers. Four of
this class were supposedly built: the Sovereign,
Autarch, Heresiarch, and Despot. However, they all
were captured or destroyed by the New Republic
within a year, and no others were built.
